Maxxis South Eastern Dirt Series....Race 1 report.
First we have to give a huge Thank You to Mark Mancinelli who sponsored us for this race...Without him we would have had to stay home....Great guy that has a ton of racing experience from Nascar to Arca to Dirt latemodels....He builds killer crate carbs and has a full service shop including a chassis dyno...For all Ya'll that have moved onto racing cars look him up....He can help get U to the front.
The day started out beautifully...Sunny and only a few clouds in the sky even though the weather channel was calling for a 60% chance of rain...Well they were wrong again we got a 200% chance...LOL It rained twice, first time for only 15 or 20 minutes and the second for over an hour....This is what the Dawgwood track looked like after 1 hour of hard rain.....About 30 minutes later we turned 12.1's while ironing the track back out. Unreal how much speed the track held after all that rain....Great job by Rodney and crew.
We kept up with the track pretty good all day and night long even though sometimes we deal with distractions while working on the kart in our pits, as Mark pointed out sometimes talking to the other racers can bite U in the butt...Hell it's half the reason we go to the track to socialize...But maybe we need to rethink our focus while working on the kart....? We enjoy helping other karters but would prefer to talk when we are not involved with working on getting ready for the next run.
We were alittle too conservative in Animal 375 just not enough grip...Crossed the start finish line in 6th out of 22 but ended up with a 5th place finish after a couple DQ's....We were dead on with our set-up and tire call in the Pro race...Started the race in 5th and lost a couple of spots on the start...That was OK by lap 4 he was back up to 4th and coming strong....He got passed one or two laps later while maybe being too patient with the karts in front of him and took a hit to the LR tire that pushed it all the way against the frame rail....Needless to say the handling of the kart went to crap with the LR now sliding back and forth on the axle....We had two different offset LR wheels and I had to keep moving the hub...I guess too much dirt and grim got between the hub and axle and that helped....We did check it and thank God I didn't leave it loose.....Learn something new everytime we are at the track....From now on I'll clean the axle before moving the hub....He crossed the finish line this race in 8th or 9th but finished 5th after 4 other karts were DQ'ed...That was good enough for a new set of right side Maxxis tires.
All in all a real good night at the track even though we didn't finish well and didn't get home in bed till 4:45 Sunday morning.
